Operating system mode

Two modes

1.CUI    -   Character user interface  (without color Dos)

2. GUI  -  Graphical  user interface (with color ) Ex-Win Xp, Win  95,win98,

        win 2000….  upto windows 10

    Disk Operating System (Dos)

⇒ IBM introduce Dos but microsoft taken ownership and changed the name as MS-Dos

⇒ We use Dos now for troubleshooting GUI OS

⇒ To do Dos we need a boot CD

CPU units –Two types

⇒ Arithmetic logic unit – which performs arithmetic  and logical operation

⇒ Control Units – which extracts instructions from memory and decodes and executes them calling on the ALU when neccessary.

Removable storage devices

⇒ CD – compact disk (700mb)

⇒ DVD – Digital versatile disc ( 4.7 – 12 gb)

⇒ Blueray Disc – 50 Gb ( can store upto 25 gb single layer disc and 50 gb on dual layer disc)

System Units 

⇒ Core unit – Motherboard (A circuit board that allows the cpu to interact with other parts of the computer

⇒ Storage unit – CD, DVD, Pendrive, Harddisk

⇒ Power unit – SMPS (it convert 230v to 12v )

SMPS types

⇒ XT- Extended technology (5+6=11 pin)

⇒ AT – Advanced technology (6+6=12 pin)

⇒ ATX - Advanced technology Extended (10+10=20 pin)

⇒ MATX – Micro Advanced technology Extended 

(24 pin)

⇒ Y splitter – It is used to extend molex connection

Harddisk maintanence tools

⇒ Disk Cleanup – To delete unwanted temporary files

⇒ Disk Defragment – To arrange sector in order

⇒ Scan disk – To check for bad sector

Paging & Virtual memory

⇒ If RAM memory is full and take some space in harddisk that work is called Paging

⇒ A space taken in harddisk is called virtual memory

⇒ Win386.swp – For automatic paging file
